For most smartphone manufacturers, 2017 has been all about bringing large edge-to-edge displays on a compact form factor. But in 2018, Xiaomi could be turning things up a notch as it looks to go with a massive 7-inch 18:9 display with the Mi Max 3. The successor to the 6.44-inch Mi Max 2 phablet is rumoured to sport a larger display as the company is expected to chop down the bezels further.
Both the Mi Max and Mi Max 2 have been Xiaomi's large screen phablet phones that have come with big bezels. But as we move towards a full-screen future, the company will likely reduce the bezels on the Mi Max 3 to make more room for a large 7-inch display. This won't be surprising as the company is among the first to go bezel-less with the Mi Mix last year. It followed it up with the Mi Mix 2 earlier this year and most recently brought the bezel-less displays to budget Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus.
The latest report about the upcoming Mi Max 3 phablet is that the smartphone will sport a huge 7-inch display. This may sound like Xiaomi is inching towards the tablet space rather than sticking to the phablet segment. However, rumours suggest Xiaomi will achieve the 7-inch display by keeping the same 6.44-inch footprint of the Mi Max and Mi Max 2 and reducing the bezels significantly for an 18:9 aspect ratio. The Mi Max 3 is set to be the largest Xiaomi smartphone next year.
Additionally, the Mi Max 3 is tipped to come in two SoC variants, one with Snapdragon 630 processor and one with Snapdragon 660 chipset. The same report also suggests a dual rear camera setup and a massive 5500mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0. As the phone is expected to come with an 18:9 aspect ratio, one can expect it to sport a full HD+ (2160x1080) resolution as well. As there is still a few months to go before Xiaomi unveils the Mi Max 3, one should take these rumours with a pinch of salt.
To recall, the Mi Max 2 was launched in India in June this year priced at Rs 16,999. The phablet came with a 6.44-inch full HD (1920x1080) display and was powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. Optics for the Mi MAX 2 included a 12-megapixel rear sensor with dual-LED flash and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.
